3 Questions to help you prioritize when running a business

To give you context - I am currently part of The Indonesian Ministry of Education, Research & Technology’s initiatives in building The Biggest Single Education Account in The World - that works with Google, per today(13 July 2022)we are serving over 50+ Million teachers and students.

This questions came up from a person that I look up to at the organizations; Kautsar Anggakara. He’s leading the design team within GovTech Edu, Indonesia.

Hopefully with this article, you’d be able to help yourselves, your organization, and teams to move forward in a better mindset achieving your best productive state without getting overwhelmed.

Now these are the questions;

  1. What happen if we don’t do this now?

    This questions might sound simple, but in an unhealthy organization, this could be challenging to ask. Imagine if your boss say that “I want to review the draft of the presentations for the 2 months ahead presentation - tomorrow”, in a healthy organizations that doesn’t breed fear as their core management value, you might want to consider how relevant would that review be, considering the potential changes.

    The goal of asking this question; is to set expectations and boundaries for whoever is responsible and accountable for this particular task. If it is do or die, then you’ll straight away get the answer that this task is important.

  2. Is there any other capable person that have the time for this?

    Depending on where your role is, this question might not apply to you. However - understanding that if in fact there is another person who’s more capable of doing this, it will set you up; to whether you need to take the accountability for this task, should you be the only person that’s capable, or to sit back and reflect if you can bring a better result in the case of availability of other capable person.

  3. Why me? What’s the quality in me that is required to complete and bring the best result for this task?

    An example for this question can be seen in this analogy; Imagine if you are running a Branding Design Agency, and you wonder “Why do I have to be in the meeting with the potential clients?” - As a business owner, the skill to sell is non-negotiable. Knowing that you need to do this, because you’re the best in the particular field, should be a “YES” to a task you need to take on.

    However, as a business owner, you also need to know, that while you’re good at some things, you might not be good at others. If you’re not good with accounting, then hire the right person for it. This means that you are aware of your area of improvement, while doubling down your strength.
